DIVORCE

Ryan still remembers the day his best friend, Keith, told him that his parents are getting a divorce. It was a few years ago. He was in ninth grade. 

Ryan didn’t appreciate the hardships of divorce at that time. He was too young. ​All he remembers thinking was that Keith and his younger brother were lucky their mother, Janice, got custody of them because Keith’s father was a scary guy. 

After the divorce, Janice didn’t have it easy. She worked two jobs and still didn’t have enough money.  She needed the child support payments from Keith’s father to cover their monthly expenses.  

About a month ago, Keith’s father stopped sending Janice the payments. Apparently, he lost his job. So, there’s no point calling her lawyer... Keith’s Father can’t send money he doesn’t have. Is she supposed to borrow money she knows one hundred percent she can’t pay back?   

Ryan didn’t believe the rumors that Janice was on the streets trying to earn some extra money until he drove by her tonight and saw her working a street corner. He can’t believe that Janice the housewife became Janice the whore.  

He wonders if Keith knows. 

Ryan decides he has to help Janice and what she needs most is money. So, he drives back to the street corner and hires Janice for the night.
